Oisín`s have began the long road to the championship with their first challenge game of the year against Preston University side UCLAN. The game very nearly didn`t go ahead as weather conditions in Manchester were very poor following heavy snow and sleet the day before the game. After a pitch inspection the game was given the green light and both teams played the game in good spirits although the weather meant the contest was far from a vintage one. UCLAN eventually won the game 2-10 to 1-8 but Oisín`s more than held their own and but for sharper skills and a keener eye for the uprights could have won the game. The performance wasn`t bad considering they were playing against a team that have been training for the University Championships since September. Oisín`s would like to wish UCLAN all the best in the Championships next week and hopefully underfoot conditions will be a bit better than Hough End this weekend.
The challenge match is one of a number the club will be playing in the coming weeks as they have one eye on the Pennine League and the other on the trip to Dubai for the Dubai Celts 9`s competition in March. The club has purchased a set of one off jerseys for the trip. The kit is an Aussie Rules vest which should keep the lads cool in the Dubai sun. These tops will be available to purchase on the Oisín`s section of the O`Neills website in the coming weeks.
The club will be stepping up training this week and have purchased floodlights (more news in the coming weeks) to help make training on our own pitches in the winter easier. The floodlights will make their debut this Tuesday night 7th Feb. These along with the recent purchase of an ice bath continue to keep Oisín`s as Manchester`s number one G.A.A. club.
Oisín CLG are always looking for new players for both their mens and ladies teams. Founded in 1904 we are the oldest club in the North West. We are the only club in the North West to play on a non council owned pitch and we have our own clubhouse beside the pitch which includes bar and changing facilities.
If you are new to Manchester or the North West then we will always try and assist you in finding employment, accommodation and transport to training. Oisín`s began their pre season round of matches today when they took on UCLAN at Hough End. Conditions were far from ideal with a semi frozen snow covered pitch.
Both teams were happy to have a run out but football was far from vintage from either side. Oisín`s held their own and for large parts of the game were the better side. In the end UCLAN`s match fitness won it for them. 2-10 to 1-8.
Oisín`s would like to wish UCLAN all the best in the University Championships next weekend.
Training continues on Tues 7:30pm down at Old Bedians.

Fullen Gaels manager Stan Murray-Hession admits that they were outplayed by a superior Charleville side in the All-Ireland club JHC semi final.
The Cork side ran out 14-point winners at Walsh Park, Waterford last weekend and even though Murray-Hession feels that his side can play a lot better, he admitted the best team won. "We never really got going. We didn`t perform as well as we`re capable of but when all is said and done, Charleville are an absolutely fine team. They`ll take some beating in the final," Murray-Hession told the Irish Post. "They`re well capable of winning an All-Ireland title. We just didn`t create problems for them, which is a massive shame."

Charleville easily disposed of the threat of Fullen Gaels following an impressive 1-17 to 0-6 win at Walsh Park on Sunday.
The Lancashire side (who play their hurling in Warwickshire) were out of their depth in this match, even though they did lead by 0-2 to 0-1 after eight minutes, but that was as good as it got for the exiles.
Assisted by points from James O`Brien (2), Andrew Cagney, James Casey and Brendan Dennehy, the Cork champions lead by 0-10 to 0-4 at half time.
In the second half, Mark Kavanagh scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute to book their place in the All-Ireland final.
Despite this defeat by the Cork and Munster champions Fullen Gaels must hold their heads up high and no doubt will be overjoyed by the progress they`ve made this season. With the progress Gaels are making who knows maybe Croker is just around the corner?

Lancashire’s Fullen Gaels take on Charleville (County Cork and Munster champions) this Sunday at Walsh Park in Waterford in the All Ireland Junior hurling championship semi-final. Fullen Gaels captain, Kevin Codd, insists that the lure of Croke Park will not be a distraction for him or for his fully focused team mates this Sunday when they step out onto the turf at Walsh Park. All that separates Gaels from GAA headquarters is a mere 60 minutes of championship hurling.
Codd believes as his side are from Lancashire with its small GAA community there will be less pressure on them and this may be an advantage. “I think the advantage of living over here in Britain is there is no GAA community bar ourselves – no friends, no family, and the local parish – so for us it’s like if we win, great, we’ll be going to Croke Park. There’s no real pressure for us to get there, we’re just focusing on Walsh Park at the moment.”
Fullen gaels were founded back in 2005 and are based in Manchester with players from Manchester, Liverpool and surrounding areas of Lancashire/Merseyside. They only made the Warwickshire breakthrough in 2010 and have gone from strength to strength since. However a further step up in performance will be needed this Sunday as they take on this year’s cork champions. 12 months ago Gaels were brought back down to earth with the 13 point defeat to last year’s Cork champions, Meelin. However Gaels have gained much from the experience and again have improved all year and believe this year they can go at least one step better by beating the Cork/Munster champions Charleville this weekend.
All at Lancashire GAA wish Fullen Gaels all the best for the game this weekend. Result and match report will follow Sunday’s game on the Lancashire website.
