Ellan Vannin Gaels  1-7   vs   1-22 St Peters

  Date:   Saturday 24th April 2010

Competition:   Senior League

  Venue:   Isle of Man

On Saturday evening last, St. Peter’s travelled to the Isle of Man for their first Lancashire Senior League fixture of the season and came away with a hard earned win against a buoyant Ellan Vannin Gaels. Played in perfect conditions, the 5.30pm kickout meant the afternoon sun had set and with minimal wind conditions and no rain, both teams were able to play some attractive running football.

St. Peter’s started the brighter and from the throw in, they looked to hit the full forward line of John O’Neill and Stewart Cherry with early ball. Scores by Paddy O’Brien and Shane Gallagher settled the visitors. EV Gaels hit back with a couple of frees from the accurate boot of midfielder Darren McGuinness. Due to the short length of the pitch, it was end to end football and the crowd at Douglas Rugby Grounds seemed to enjoy the football on offer. Peter’s had built up a 6 point lead before a lapse in concentration allowed EV Gaels to move the ball into the full forward and at the second time of asking, Joe Garrity rifled a low left foot shot under St. Peter’s Goalkeeper Fergal Tuohy. Midfield exchanges were even for the remaining minutes of the half although St. Peter’s Joe Corcoran and Ronan Gallagher pointed from play to send the visitors in at half time with a 5 point cushion. This lead could have been more not for some fine shot stopping from EV Gaels Ed Doherty.

The second half began well for EV Gaels with another free from the boot of Darren McGuinness cutting St Peter’s lead to 4. The St. Peter’s half back line of Mangan, Vahey & McGeehan were mopping up well behind the midfield and they were the catalyst for many of the second half scores. Eamon Mangan pointed on the overlap to take his tally to 2 points for the game and Vahey hit a long range point to put some daylight between the sides. Points from Rory Gavin and Darren McGuinness for the Gaels caused St. Peter’s to go hunting for some goals to finish the game but Ed Doherty in the EV Gaels goal pulled off three terrific saves from Messrs O’Brien, Gallagher and O’Neill. John O’Neill did get his just reward for a lively 60minutes with an accurate chip over the on-rushing Gaels keeper. He was the receiver off a delightful cross field from Paddy O’Brien and the Cavan man did what the rest of the St. Peter’s team couldn’t!

The game ended with a 15 point win for St. Peter’s. It was by no means a polished effort from last year’s County Finalists and credit must go to a stubborn Ellan Vannin Gaels side that took their scores well and remained competitive right up to the final whistle.

A special word of thanks must go to Ellan Vannin Gaels for providing the after match food and the St. Peter’s team were very impressed with set up they have on the Island in relation to Gaelic Football.
